Earthing Components

Earthing: the indispensable basis of an electric fence system

Why is earthing needed and how does it work?

An electrical fence is a circuit through which current flows. It consists of an energizer, fencing wire to conduct the current, insulators to prevent power losses into the ground, and a good earth. The earth ensures that the current can flow back to the energizer if an animal contacts the fencing. This is the tent effect.

What does an earthing system look like?

For a good earth, you need a 2 m stake (1 m stake for storage batteries), an earth terminal and a lead-out cable. If more than one stake is needed, they should be placed at least three metres apart. It is a good idea to install extra earths if the soil is sandy or very dry, or to use the special Bentonite mixture.
